Choosing a walker boot after a lower-limb fracture

A CAM (controlled ankle motion) walker boot is used to immobilize and protect the foot and lower leg while a fracture heals, and to allow controlled, supported weight-bearing where a clinician has approved it.

What the boot does

The rigid outer shell limits movement of the ankle and foot, while adjustable straps hold the shell in a fixed position against the leg. A rocker sole allows a more natural walking motion than a flat rigid sole would.

Fit

A boot that is too loose will not restrict motion effectively; one that is too tight can restrict circulation. Fit should be checked and adjusted under the guidance of the prescribing clinician, not selected by size chart alone.

Wearing period

The length of time a walker boot is worn depends on the specific injury and is determined by the treating clinician — it is not a fixed, universal timeframe.
